Castel National Park

The Crusaders, who occupied the Land of Israel in the Middle Ages, built fortresses to protect the roads leading to the Holy City. One of these fortresses was called Castellum Belvoir Centuries later, after bloody battles, wrested control, Arabs from the region settled in the remains of the fortress and established the village of Al Kastel, preserving the name of the Crusader fortress.

During the Arab siege of Jerusalem (1947-1948) in the War of Independence, armored convoys that brought essential supplies to the beleaguered city were the targets of sniper fire and ambushes from this village. The Haganah (the pre-state army) launched Operation Nahshon to break the Arab blockade In April 1948, the Palmach (pre-state military striking force) wrested control of the strategic site.

The story of the battles unfolds as you climb the fortress, which features a memorial site for the soldiers that fell in the heroic fight.

The Castel picnic areas overlook breathtaking scenery. You can book various activities.

Don’t miss: “The Values Path an interactive experience with activity stations that highlights the values of the fighters.

Did you know? Because of the impressive view from the site, the Crusaders named it “Castellum Belvoir” -a citadel with a beautiful view.
