THE DOVECOTE AT GIVAT BRENNER
The dovecote was built in 1948 on the model of
an American Army dovecote, and was operated
by the pigeon unit of the IDF Communications Corps until 1953. This dovecote replaced the “Hagana” and Palmach carrier pigeon dovecote that operated in the kibbutz starting in 1940. The carrier pigeons, which were raised and trained in the dovecote, were used for rapid and effective communications with remote communities and during combat. The dovecote at Givat Brenner is the last remnant of the carrier pigeon dovecotes
that once operated in Israel. For years, the building stood in ruins, almost forgotten. In 2008, the dovecote was again put on the agenda by members of the Palmach photo archives and kibbutz members. Since then, the Heritage Program “Landmarks” at The Ministry of Jerusalem & Heritage together with the Council for Conservation of Heritage Sites in Israel, Kibbutz Givat Brenner and the Brenner Regional Council, have cooperated in promoting the preservation and rehabilitation of the site. In 2014, physical reconstruction and preservation of the site began. In 2015, the dovecote was repopulated with carrier pigeons, and once again began to operate. It is now considered as a National heritage site
