Reuven Lerer, a farmer and wealthy merchant from Odessa, meets a German named Reissler in 1878, who lives in Wadi El-Hanin. Lerer’s great love of Zion persuades him to exchange land: He gives his land in Odessa to Reissler and Reissler transfers his estate, where you are now standing, to Lerer
In 1882, Reuven and his son Moshe, immigrate to the Holy Land. From the Jaffa port they go to the Kotel, the Wailing Wall, in Jerusalem, and thence on to the new property, Wadi El-Hanin
Reuven and Moshe decide to build their home there. Afterwards, the 16-years old Moshe remains to protect the estate and Reuven returns to Odessa in order to bring the rest of his family to Eretz Israel. The family arrives in 1883 and names the place Nahalat Reuven. The first building was constructed, and the first Minyan (quorum of ten males for prayer) was founded here
